Worried About Your Aged Loved One? 4 Signs That They Can No Longer Live Independently
Dec 05, 2021 13:59
If you have an elderly parent, close friend, or other loved one, then you will always be naturally concerned as to their physical and mental wellbeing, even if they are active, healthy and happy.
However, there may come a time (but it is important to remind you that this is not always the case) when they may no longer be best suited to living independently in their own home.
With that in mind, continue reading to learn of the four most prominent indicators that your aging loved one may need to move into a senior living community.
1.Their Eating Habits Have Changed or Drastically Reduced
One of the major signs of an older adult who is no longer equipped, be that physically or mentally, to live in their own home is any sign whatsoever of poor nutrition or a refusal to eat.
If they insist they are eating well, then hopefully this is the case, but checking the fridge to see if there is still fresh food present, and also the cupboards to check there are plenty of provisions is a subtle way of checking if you are concerned they are not eating properly.
2.They Seem to Be Forgetting Things Considerably More Regularly
Another prominent sign that your aging loved one is struggling with the day-to-day duties and responsibilities of living independently is that they appear to be becoming increasingly more forgetful.
Obviously, forgetting your trail of thought or being unable to remember why you entered a particular room is not only a natural sign of aging but also happens to people of all ages. However, when talking to your loved one, if they seem to be forgetting key bits of information, then it may be time to consider, with their natural consent, a move to assisted living Maryland where they will be safe, secure, and happy.
3.Their Personality Is No Longer Consistent
Again, a natural change in personality and a person’s likes, dislikes and passion is entirely normal as a person ages.
However, if your loved one has started to behave uncharacteristically and is showing signs of aggression, either inwardly or to their nearest and dearest, then this may be cause for concern. Other proverbial red flags to look out for, should you be concerned about your loved one’s change in personality, include a loss of normal and reasonable judgement, inappropriate or socially unacceptable behaviour and a general state of confusion.
4.Their Home Is Unclean, Cluttered & in General Disarray
The most aesthetically obvious way to ascertain whether or not your aging loved one is still entirely competent and coping with living independently and running their own home is if their house appears clean, tidy and in general order.
Hoarding, dishes and plates piled up in the sink, unmade and dirty bedding and a general loss of attention to cleanliness and pride in the home are all signs they are struggling to cope.
