Thinking of taking on the paleo diet? Think again, because according to a new study, it's not as good as you think it is. The findings from the University of Melbourne has found that the new Paleo diet actually leads to more weight gain. Wtf?
A new study of the trendy Paleo diet shows that the low-carb, high-fat regimen of meat, fish, eggs, nuts, veggies, fruits and oils caused mice to get fatter and develop new health risks.
“There is a very important public health message here,” said researcher Sof Andrikopoulos, who is also president of the Australian Diabetes Society. “You need to be very careful with fad diets. Always seek professional advice for weight management and always aim for diets backed by evidence.”
Researchers at the University of Melbourne, concerned about the potential ill-effects of the Paleo diet on sedentary, pre-diabetic and overweight patients, conducted the tests on two groups of overweight mice.
One group was fed the low-carb, high-fat diet. The other group of mice was fed their usual food.
Within eight weeks, mice on the Paleo grub gained 15% of their body weight. In a 200-pound person on the diet, that would translate to gaining 30 pounds in just two months.
The mice fed the Paleo diet also developed increased glucose intolerance, which could lead to diabetes.
