The clip was uploaded by “Mipsterz”, a cultural group/movement/identity who seek inspiration from both Islam and the “hipster” aesthetic.



This video features women styled to combine the traditional Muslim headscarf with both traditional and Western outfits (think Yuna). The ladies are also shown doing everyday hipster stuff like skateboarding, taking selfies, and hanging out, to the backdrop of Jay Z’s “Somewhere in America.”

Since the clip went up, the reactions have been mixed, with some saying it defies stereotypes while others think it's sending out the wrong message.

But regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the video's intent, you have to admit that it deserves credit for starting a much needed conversation about Muslim female identity in the United States.
