If you fancy revamping your floors then you may have opted for the classic wood look and we commend you for that! Wood floors make a fantastic addition to any home and they can transform any space that they are installed in, but there’s just one problem.. do you opt for a dark wood floor or do you opt for a light wood floor? Decisions decisions! We’ve took it upon ourselves to present a case for both, that way you can decide for yourself..

Dark Floors

For a bolder appearance most people opt for darker floors, although they are bold in some ways they’re quite subtle when it comes to making a statement. It’s often said that darker floors can make your room appear darker and smaller than it actually is, now this is true in some cases but it is also counteracted by the way in which dark floors can make a room appear more cosy and warm, especially when the colder months roll in. Not only are darker floors practical when it comes to saving on the heating, they’re also fun too! They pair amazingly well with more daring and brash colours, think bright yellow or fuchsia pink, these sort of colours can make the floor appear to ‘pop’.  However, we do think that it’s important to say that you don’t have to feel obliged to be “out there” when it comes to your decor, the great thing about dark floors is how versatile they are and they have a wonderful ability to help bring natural tones into your home; especially when paired with neutral colours.

There are plenty of finishes available on darker floors but one of the most common is definitely matte. This has been an ongoing trend over the last few years and shows absolutely no sign of slowing in popularity. Not only are matte floors super trendy, they’re also practical too, especially when it comes to children and pets. This is because matte floors tend not to show as much dirt, dust or footprints as glossier floors.

Light Floors

Light flooring doesn’t have to mean white, it can mean anything from pale blonde to grey.. although white floors do fall into the lighter category! These colours are exactly what’s in at the moment; they all fall perfectly into the Scandinavian decor theme that’s had a lot of recognition over the last 12 months. Lighter floors are really good at acting as a backdrop, especially if you’re looking to accent certain interiors and furnishings. They also offer a lovely fresh and crisp feel to the room too, especially as the lighter tones allow the space to look bigger and appear brighter. Light floors are great if you want to create a modern vibe in the room, simply pair light furnishings with the floor - in fact, greys work particularly well for this kind of look.

When it comes to practicality light floors certainly have an advantage over their darker counterparts, they tend to show less dirt and dust and are easier to to clean and maintain in general. If your floor does get scratched it is much less likely to show up than what it would on a dark floor too.

Comparison

So how do the two compare? Well, if you mean by price it actually depends on the type of wood that the floor is made from, not the colour. The finish that the flooring also has an effect on the price too, for example if you opted for a floor that was unfinished i.e. you had to buy the stain and finish it yourself then this would generally be cheaper than a pre-finished floor. In conclusion, the choice between a light or dark floor completely comes down to personal choice and whatever works with your decor at home!
