A company called August, is developing a smart lock which users can open with their smartphones. They also announced that it has raised $8 million in Series A funding from Maveron, Rho Ventures, SoftTech VC and others. They also got $2 million in seed funding raised prior to its launch which is intended to bring the lock to market next year.

“With distribution of our smart lock on the horizon, we will leverage this financing and our new partners to perfect the August consumer experience and scale our operations in advance of shipping,” Jason Johnson, August's cofounder and CEO, said in a statement.

Its smart locks will connect to your phone via Bluetooth and lets users share virtual keys with friends and family. It will retail for $199.

Devices that adhere to the Internet of Things will see a huge boom in 2014 for sure.
