USB's Latest Standard Will Let You Charge Your Gadgets
Dec 09, 2013 20:35
The future of USB is bright. The latest 3.0 update brought us speeds of up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0. Now, a new standard is allowing you to charge and transmit massive amounts of power enough to even charge your laptop.
The USB PD standard means that the future USB cables will carry up to 100 watts of power. It can handle both power and data and the new standard will be able to figure out how much voltage you need based on five profiles (10W, 18W, 36W, 60W and 100W).
USB power is more efficient, and it is also less expensive and safer than the typical power adapters. Also, it's very convenient and easy to carry around. And since it is ubiquitous, it is only a matter of time before it becomes the standard for charging mobile electronic devices.
Expect the first examples of USB PD sometime in 2014, with worldwide implementation by 2015.
