Systolic and diastolic blood pressure

So that the body can be supplied with blood and thus also with oxygen and nutrients, the blood must be in constant circulation throughout the human cycle. 

This function is largely taken over by our heart, which pumps blood into the vessels with every beat, but also the so-called venous valves, which transport blood back to the heart with every muscle action. Since the vessel walls, in particular the arteries, are elastic, they can expand immediately after each heartbeat and thus briefly absorb the amount of blood pumped by the heart during a beat, and then slowly pass it on to the circulation. This ensures a largely continuous flow of blood through the arteries and veins in the body - despite the heart's periodically pumping capacity.

The systolic value is determined the moment the heart contracts and blood is pumped into the vessels. Find a comfortable chair and avoid the slightest exertion; otherwise the blood pressure would immediately rise.
Devices for the upper arm or wrist, which have a pressure cuff, are typically used for the measurement. The measuring process and the inflation of the cuff are usually carried out automatically, but also manually in older devices or in medical practices.

When measuring on the wrist, you should first feel your pulse in order to place the device exactly at this point.
For measurements with a wrist blood pressure monitor, it is also important that the measuring point is approximately at the same height as your heart!

In the case of a measurement on the upper arm, this is usually the case and an incorrect measurement due to an incorrect position is rather unlikely. 

However, if the blood pressure is measured at the wrist, your elbow should be lightly supported on a table top and your forearm should be slightly raised with the wrist. When measuring the upper arm, the forearm should simply rest relaxed on the table top or an armrest.

Right or left - which arm is the right one?
In principle, you can measure your blood pressure on both your right and left arm. 
However, you will usually always measure a higher value on one arm than on the other. Whether it is the right or left arm differs from person to person.

It is therefore a good idea to always determine the blood pressure on the right and left arm when taking your first measurements. 

If the values on one arm tend to be slightly higher than on the other, you should always use this arm - with the higher values - for future measurements.

In the morning ... in the evening ... when is the best time?
The measurement of blood pressure should ideally be done in the morning, because high blood pressure values in the morning are particularly critical. In particular, for patients who take antihypertensive medication, the morning measurement is usually essential. The measurement should always be made before taking the medication.

However, your blood pressure will also fluctuate throughout the day. It is therefore advisable, at least at the beginning of your own measurements, to measure your blood pressure at different times of the day. In this way you can find out over time when your blood pressure values are highest during the day and whether this could be related to certain previous activities, for example.

Too high or too low? - It's all about the right pressure.
Measuring blood pressure gives you two values at hand:

The systolic and diastolic pressures. 

The systolic value is always mentioned first by definition, followed by the diastolic value. The blood pressure is already considered to be elevated if only one of the two values is too high after several measurements. Values below 140 mmHg (systolic) and below 90mmHg (diastolic) are considered normal for adults. If you regularly determine blood pressure values that are above these limit values, you should consult a doctor.
