Toyota realized that drivers are too distracted before they even get into their cars, so they created a solution to this problem. It's called the Driver Awareness Research Vehicle (DAR-V), and it's a Sienna-based prototype unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show that is said to help prevent accidents from happening.
Toyota DAR-V was developed in partnership with Microsoft Research, featuring interactive systems integrated into the design of the vehicle that display important, highly personalized information on the side window when the driver approaches the car.
By using gestures, voice and key fob, drivers can navigate information such as updates on traffic and weather, appointments and schedules for the day ahead, and even route details that include a gas station if the vehicle is low on fuel.
Toyota believes that addressing these daily priorities before stepping inside the car can help drivers be less distracted and focus on driving. Also, since the DAR-V system can recognize and differentiate between individuals, it can also be used to reduce other driver distractions such as kids. The system may engage children in "games" designed to help them buckle up quickly.
