Could having more sex increase one's brain mass? According to a new study, this might just be the case.
Whereas previous studies have shown that stressful, unpleasant situations can hinder brain growth, researchers from Princeton University decided to conduct a bizarre experiment using lab rats to see if stressful but pleasurable situations a.k.a. sex would achieve the opposite effect.
The study demonstrated that rats which had regular sex showed adult brain growth, as well as an increase in the connections between brain cells. As a possible effect of their larger brains, the sexually experienced rats were less anxious and quicker to eat food in an unfamiliar environment than the un-sexed rodents.
These findings were presented online in the journal PLoS ONE.
