Zoe Shepherd could be sentenced to 49 years in Bolivian jail,
after caught red-handedly  trying to smuggle cocaine.

A British teenager is arrested in La Paz, Bolivia for allegedly trying to smuggle 49 grammes cocaine out of the country.

Zoe Shepherd, 19, was arrested as she boarded an aircraft to leave the country last month. If found guilty could face 49 years in prison.

The teenager has contacted her family through the social networking site Facebook and has also been allowed to phone home.

Her mother, Mandy Lemmon, of Manea, near March, Cambridgeshire, last night refused to talk about the case. She said: 'As far as I am concerned, this is a private, family matter.'

UK's Foreign Office spokesman said, "We can confirm the arrest of a British national in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, on 13 April, 2009 and we are providing consular assistance to het."
