For all of those recent college graduates out there who have yet to cross over into the adult world, we feel you. There’s no shame in having approximately one complete business casual outfit that you used for every single one of your interviews. It’s also okay that you’re still trying adjust to waking up before 9:00 in the morning and that you’re not okay to talk to until your third cup of coffee.
Don’t worry. You’ll acquire more presentable outfits and you’re body will adjust to the time change, but you might be out of luck with the coffee addiction. Everyone’s been in your position at some point in his or her lifetime, so you’re not alone. Preparing for the first job can sometimes be harder than getting one in the first place. So, here’s a guide to 6 things you absolutely need to own before starting this new adventure if you want to be organized and successful. Good luck!
1.Your favorite pair of work pants
Shirts are a dime a dozen, but work pants? Those are hard to find. Get yourself a nice pair of black pants that will go well with just about any blouse you find. Don’t be afraid to splurge a little here, they’re going to have to buy you some time until you can afford that shopping spree.
2.A clean laptop case
If you were a typical college kid, you probably decorated your laptop case with all sorts of stickers. Looking back, some might not be so appropriate to rock at work. Instead of covering them up with even more stickers, bag the whole sticker décor altogether. Get a clean, slick, laptop case and start completely fresh. If your company has a sticker of their logo, that’s a decoration you’re permitted to use. Other than that, you’ll probably get made fun of by the older crowd.
One of the hardest things to get used to is having to sit for nearly 8 hours a day. If you’re starting a job that’s primarily done at your desk, you’re in for a sore back and neck. Before there’s no turning back, buy a cushion that can help with your posture and help you avoid those aches and pains. This is a purchase you won’t regret.
4. Pixel computer glasses
Whether you wear glasses or not, these are a pair you need. If you haven’t yet felt the short-term effects of staring at your computer screen for too long, you’re about to. The blue light that stems from the screen of your smart phone, tablet, or computer can shoot all the way back to your retina. After 2 hours, you’re bound to experience tired, sore, and dry eyes. Long-term, the blue light exposure can actually cause more permanent and harmful eye conditions. Pixel computer glasses eliminate 50% of the blue light and blocks 95% of the wavelengths, protecting your eyes while you work.
5.A huge pack of gum
This is especially important because you’re not really going to know any of your co-workers yet to feel comfortable bumming a piece off of them. Not only will you have a giant pack in your desk for that one morning you’re so rushed that you totally forget to brush your teeth, but it’ll also make you pretty popular with the people at the desks around you. Make new friends, provide the gum.
6.An adult lunchbox
A paper bag lunch should be used for emergencies only. Get yourself a lunch box that can keep your food cold or warm and that you can sport with pride. The last thing you want is for your water or salad dressing to leak through a paper bag and get all over your laptop in your bag. Splurge on this expense too, it’s worth it.
