Timing is key. It's been said about relationships, strategies and well, pretty much everything. How much your links get clicked or read on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook really depends on when you post it.

Link shortening and tracking service bit.ly revealed the latest data on the best and worst times to share links on these social networks.

Posting links to Twitter on a Monday between 1pm and 3pm ET (or 10am to 1pm PT) will give you the highest click rank especially on the earlier days in the week. Sending tweets with links after 8pm should be avoided, and tweets with links after 3.pm on Fridays are deemed fruitless.

Things are a little different for Facebook, with links between 1pm and 4pm getting the most traction and Wednesday at 3pm being the best time to post on Facebook all week. Links before 8am and after 8pm get the least clicks and bit.ly recommends not posting stuff you want to go viral in the weekend. On a daily basis, traffic begins to increase around 9am but it's recommended that 11am onwards would be the best time to post links on Facebook. Traffic from Facebook fades after 4pm.

Tumblr however, marks a different pattern from the first two social network sites. It’s suggested to wait until at least 4:00 p.m. ET. to post important content, and posts that go up after 7:00 p.m. get the most clicks during a 24-hour period. Friday evenings are a great time to post on Tumblr (the time slot bit.ly recommends avoiding on Facebook and Twitter. Bit.ly traffic from Tumblr is the highest between 7pm and 10pm on Monday and Tuesday, with similar traffic on Sunday.

"It’s easy to see that just like your neighborhood restaurants, each social network has its own culture and behavior patterns,” bit.ly wrote in their blog post. “By understanding the simple characteristics of each social network, you can publish your content at exactly the right time for it to reach the maximum number of people.”
