First of all, lets get one thing straight - the reason people indulge in smoking, drinking, and overeating is because it feels good. And according to this study, these vices might even stave off depression; that is, if you happen to be black:
While this opener might appear to be general, the study in fact refers specifically to African-American health. Led by social scientist James Jackson of the University of Michigan, he purports to "explain a long-time epidemiological puzzle: why African Americans have worse physical health than whites but better psychiatric health."
What he found was definitely and eye-opener: unhealthy habits like smoking, drinking, and overeating make white people more depressed in stressful situations, they appear to lessen depression in black populations.
