Here's one way to solve a common problem faced by both humans and mother nature - eliminating the casual use of disposable plastic bags. Instead, start using your own carrier bag while shopping.

We often bring home oodles of plastic bags from markets, stores, and supermarkets that we would probably throw away after or stow away (probably in another plastic bag!) for other uses. Of course plastic bags are always handy to be used again and again, but once we discover a punctured or ripped bag, we would most likely throw it away. Whether these plastic bags find their way to landfills, recycling centers, or the drains and rivers is unknown. Perhaps a bird or two will die from our discarded plastic bags, and we'd never know. Either that or we would find hidden corners in our home cluttered with plastic bags. Whatever it is, plastic bags never go away.

Mother nature's problem with plastic bags is the litter mess it makes. Plastic bags are usually non-biodegradable, which means the chemical contents don't get absorbed easily into the earth like organic carcasses, paper, and such. So it is a pest to nature as not only does it never go away, it kills wildlife. Animals which mistake plastic bags for a grub feasts get caught in them  or often choke or suffocate to death - not a nice way to end your life!

The use of paper bags is a lot better than plastic ones because of their bio-degrability within a shorter span of time. Unfortunately it's a major waste as most paper bags are non-reusable sue to it being more fragile and prone to rips and tears.

So our solution is, use your own carrier when you do your shopping. Carrier bags, usually made out of cloth are large and able to carry big loads. They are thicker and more durable, so you could use them for years. You shouldn't have to worry about how they look, as they definitely look better than noisy, less than cool plastic bags.

You can usually purchase the earth friendly bags from supermarkets. If you don't want to spend unnecessarily, you can use an old tote bag that's big enough to carry your groceries. Think of it this way - this simple act can help to save the earth! So do your part and start using recyclable bags!
