The home is designed to be one of the safest places a person can be. It is a place where you feel comfortable and relaxed. This feeling of safety often causes so many people to forget that there are chances some unexpected home safety hazards could occur. As safe as a house may feel or is designed to be, there are often unseen hazards which take place in homes. A knowledge of these hazards makes it easier to look out for them and prevent them from taking place. To carry out proper preventive measures, below are some of the most common home safety hazards. 1. Fire Fire hazards are not very common in a home but it is important to keep in mind that even the littlest thing can start a fire outbreak. It could be electricity, gas cookers, a candle, and so many other appliances. Without careful handling, each of these items mentioned can start a fire. In order to lessen the risk of a fire hazard, ensure you install home alarm systems. Put up fire alarms and do not leave your candles close to fabric such as curtains, beds, rugs and so on. Also, make sure little kids do not have access to candles. Confirm that you unplug your appliances after use. Also, ensure your house wiring is properly maintained and if you notice and frayed wires, do not hesitate to call on an electrician. 2. Falls Falls are the most common home hazards. While some falls might be light, without injuries or scratches, some might leave the victim with a sprained ankle or a broken bone. A person could miss a staircase and tumble down to the bottom of it, slip on a wet floor or trip over objects (such as toys) lying around. These often result in injuries or body aches. In order to prevent you and your loved ones from falling around the house, it is important that your staircases have proper railings and that wet floors are always dried up. Also, make a rule in your home stating that all objects should be kept properly to avoid tripping. 3. Choking Chocking is a scary home safety hazard as it happens at any time and to anyone. You could be eating in your home and unexpectedly, your meal would go in the wrong direction, causing you to choke. Kids, who usually would put any object they see into their mouths, might also end up choking if they aren’t quickly spotted by an adult. In order to prevent choking, make sure water is easily available to everyone in the house. Avoid adding too many spices in your meals and ensure your meals are easy to swallow. Also, do not rush when eating and make sure you have water close by. If you have kids at home, keep any objects which they could choke on away from their reach. 4. Injuries from sharp objects At least 3 out of 10 times, careless contact with sharp objects result in injuries. These injuries might be a minor cut or a major wound. Anyone can get an injury from sharp objects in a home. It could be adults and even little kids. In a home, there are a number of sharp objects which can lead to injuries. It can be kitchen utensils, the sharp edge of a bed frame, rakes, saws, a broken mirror, and so on. Even with so much sharp objects located in a home, it is possible to prevent yourself and your loved ones from getting injured by them. In order to prevent injuries from sharp objects, make sure that sharp objects are properly kept. Ensure that any broken item is either disposed or fixed. Also, ensure there is no running or pushing around the house. 5. Poisoning There are so many ways which a person can get poisoned. In a home, a number of items can lead to poisoning. Children stand a higher risk of getting poisoned as adults can often decide between what should go into their mouth and what shouldn’t. Adults suffer poisoning from unknowingly ingesting food they are allergic to. Kids on the other hand, out of curiosity, are eager to eat and drink whatever they see. Without the careful watch, they might ingest items which can turn out to be poisonous. In order to avoid poisoning in your home, keep poisonous items out of your children’s reach and avoid any food you are allergic to.
