The Future Supermarket Checkouts Will Recognize the Food, Not the Barcode (Video)

The biggest holdup at supermarket checkouts is the cashier finding the item's barcode and scanning it. There have been innovative ways to introduce other kinds of tech like RFID to speed up the checkout process but so far we've not seen any of these implemented in any supermarket just yet.
Toshiba has developed a camera based system that will recognize the food, packaged or fresh instead of the barcode. It uses a pattern recognition technology and it can identify labels or packaging as well as fresh items like fruits or vegetables which typically don't have barcodes on them.
