Love to dive? The gear, was invented by Christian Lambertsen, and you'll need to thank him for this particular extracurricular activity. He not only invented scuba gear, but coined the term too.

If you didn't already know, Scuba means self contained underwater breathing apparatus. Lambertsen named that thanks to his Lambertsen Underwater Respiratory Unit, or LARU, which was the forefather of contemporary scuba gear. It captured and recycled discarded oxygen in a separate tank and was lighter and more compact in design.

It was later on replaced by Jacques Cousteau's Aqua Lung. Rest in peace Christian Lambertsen. [via The Atlantic]
