It seems there was someone ahead of Steve Jobs some 500 years ago. German polymath Albrecht Dürer was adopting similar design principles using the now-famous letters (and in sequence!) I, O, and S.
Dürer was obviously not referring to an operating system, but he explained how artists and designers could create three-dimensional illusions based on what he called "IOS". He was referring to the shape of the letters and not the semantics.
The coincidence is fun, but a substantial link points out the fact that both use the most basic elements of design to create a realistic, dynamic experience out of something lifeless.
