Once deemed as "the healthiest oil on earth", coconut oil is an edible oil extracted from the kernel or meat of matured coconuts harvested from the coconut palm . Besides offering plenty of health benefits from beating sugar cravings to aiding weight loss, a new study suggests that it could also help in preventing cavities.

According to researchers from the Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland, enzyme-treated coconut oil (meant to mimic coconut oil after it's been digested) was effective in fighting Streptococcus bacteria by stopping its growth.

The finding, presented at the Society for General Microbiology's autumn conference, could lead to a new approach to manufacturing dental care products without the need for antibiotics.
