An international team of researchers has discovered that eating a variety of different fruits and vegetables every day could cut one's lung cancer risk.
"Aside from the amount consumed, it's also important to take into account the variety. A varied diet reduces the risk of developing this cancer, above all in smokers," Maria Jose Sanchez Perez, of the Granada Cancer Registry at the Andalusian School of Public Health, said in a statement.
The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study says that eating more than eight sub-groups of vegetables cuts lung cancer risk by 23% compared with eating less than four sub-groups. The risk falls by 4% for each unit added from another sub-group, according to the study.
These findings come from twenty three health research centers from 20 European countries who had analyzed data from 500,000 Europeans. A full report on the study is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
