We've all been there — one or two drinks with your friends, turns into one too many. You go to sleep after having a great time, only to wake-up feeling as though you'll never recover. Once you finally get out of bed, you'll often reach for unhealthy snacks or crave a greasy breakfast — not that they help.
Instead, help your body combat symptoms of a hangover with healthier options. Not only will you help your body recover more rapidly, but you'll ensure that your nutritional needs are met, even if you feel as though you may be sick any moment. Don't let your next hangover take over, opt for the following healthy foods.
Combat a Hangover with These Healthy Foods
1. Ginger or Peppermint Tea
First of all, you need water before bed and after you wake up. Why? Well, because alcohol is a diuretic, meaning, it extracts water from your body. When you become dehydrated, you're not only tired and cranky, but you will also develop a bangin' headache — sound familiar?
In addition to plenty of water, make yourself a ginger or peppermint tea. Both of these will help you rehydrate while reducing feelings of nausea. You can also cut up small pieces of fresh ginger and/or peppermint leaves, adding them to glasses of cold water. Either way, these simple additives will help soothe your tummy.
2. An Orange
Hangovers often lead to a dry mouth and a thirst you just can't quench. When you feel like your mouth is made of sandpaper, a juicy orange can be overly satisfying. Rich in vitamin C, this antioxidant will help your body recover more quickly. You can also benefit from a few slices of fresh tomatoes beside your poached eggs.
Speaking of eggs, this protein-rich food offers your body high concentrations of cysteine — an amino acid that helps counteract the effects of acetaldehyde, a toxin that forms when alcohol is metabolized. It essentially helps break down this chemical, and taurine boosts liver function.
First of all, bananas are an easy snack, so if you don't feel like moving much, all you need to do is peel away the skin. Second of all, they offer high levels of potassium — an electrolyte which is often depleted after a night of drinking. You can also blend a banana into some protein-rich Greek yogurt to make a banana smoothie.
You probably reach for coffee in the morning, even when you don't have a hangover, so it seems like an obvious choice. Although you'll get your morning fix, the caffeine in coffee also dilates blood vessels, helping you get rid of your headache that much more rapidly. When you're feeling the effects of brain fog, coffee will also help stimulate cognitive functioning.
When you drink alcohol, you naturally deplete your body's B-complex vitamins, causing you to feel weaker and fatigued. When you eat just 3 ounces of cooked salmon, you consume more than half of the daily recommended amount of vitamin B12 — as well as key amino acids and brain-healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
As mentioned, potassium levels are generally depleted after a night of drinking. In turn, you may feel weak, dizzy, and even experience minor muscle spasms. Within one avocado, you obtain approximately half of your daily recommended intake. You'll also benefit from fiber, healthy fats, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and magnesium.
8. Sweet Potatoes
After a night of drinking, your blood sugar levels will more than likely be out-of-whack. In order to regain balance, it's important to consume unrefined, complex carbohydrates. These will release sugars into your blood stream slowly, offering sustainable energy. This will ensure that your blood sugar doesn't spike and dip, reducing your risk of weakness and fatigue.
Many swear by this remedy, sucking back a couple spoonful’s of pickle juice to combat their hangover. Pickles and their juice contain high concentrations of salty electrolytes, which help your body recover after a night of heavy drinking. From regulating your body's pH to rebuilding damaged tissue, electrolytes are needed to regulate nerves, muscle function, and even your heart.
Trying to cure a hangover can sometimes feel like an impossible task. If you do find yourself dragging your feet after a night out, snack on some of the foods mentioned above.
