Woodworking can be a fascinating undertaking in itself. But if you are a serious learner, looking to carve a habit in this craft, then you need to be aware of a few things from the beginning. It will only help you enjoy your woodwork a bit more than you expect. So, here are a few suggestions for you and others who are about to begin this new exciting journey.
Look for a setup
You would need a space where you can carry out your woodworking activities without any disturbance. Since you are just starting, there is no need to think about a garage or spacious workshop. You can make do with a temporary space or table in your backyard initially. Make sure you carry sawhorses and plywood to create the setup. In case you get a fixed place, such as a garage or shed, then you can arrange your table there for good so that you don't have to bring those items every time.
Get accustomed to the tape measure
Reading a tape measure may not look like a task. But when you are woodworking, you have to be accurate with the measurements and cuts. A difference of even 1/2 inches can be huge. Hence, focus on this part. Nowadays, online resources help you adopt this skill quickly. So, you can follow one of them to understand how to go about it.
Find out about the different types of woods and their dimensions
You can get various varieties of woods in the markets, including hardwoods and softwoods. Pine, fir, spruce, and cedar are softwood species, while mahogany, cherry, maple, oak, and walnut belong to the hardwood category. Although every lumber type has its unique characteristics, most people usually use pine in DIY woodworking plans projects for beginners. Easy availability and lower price are the two driving factors here. Similarly, if you know about the dimension, you can go through the project plans and buy lumber quite easily.
Pick the necessary tools
As a beginner, you don't need to invest in the entire expensive set of woodworking tools. Start with the essential tools and then gradually move on to the advanced ones. At this stage, you can progress with power drills, saw, clamps, and sander, etc.
Select wood carefully
Another critical area to focus on is the choice of the wood board. Look for straight boards in the home improvement stores. If you come across a bowed or warped piece, then you should better leave it. These can require higher skillful handling. So, before you bring something home, check it beforehand to spare disappointments.
Prepare your wood surface
You have to do multiple things on the piece of wood that you get from the store. Painting, staining, and finishing are to name a few of them. However, if you wish to make your task easy, then consider sanding the wood first to make it ready for those stages. A well-sanded wood will make all other jobs quickly attainable for you.
So, are you game to get going with your first ever woodworking project?
