The 3 Pieces Of Clothing Every Man Needs In His Wardrobe
May 28, 2019 14:50
With so many fashion trends emerging each month, buying clothes for ourselves can feel overwhelming. How are we supposed to keep up with the latest trends? And how are we supposed to alter our style after every new collection drops?
With so much on offer in the world of men’s clothing, it can take us a while to settle into our own individual style. But, while our personal style may vary with the seasons and be inspired by what walks down the catwalks, your style can - and should - stay relatively uniform and authentic.
To create a strong sense of style is to curate a wardrobe of failsafe pieces that make you feel confident and that suit your personality and your day-to-day life. Of course, there are many occasions where you will dress outside of your sartorial norm, but to have a go-to get-up is very practical.
In order to get your style on point, you should carefully consider the your wardrobe staples - jeans, t-shirts/shirts and shoes. Keep reading for advice on how to curate a wardrobe that suits you.
Buying the right pair of jeans
Jeans are essential in any man’s wardrobe. A good pair of well-fitting jeans are timeless, practical and versatile, and can survive through years of fashion trends. Jeans can be worn in almost any occasion, from super casual to smart. Jeans can even be incorporated into workwear.
There are many different styles of jeans to suit different tastes and body types. The most common jeans for men are: regular/straight leg, skinny, slim and loose/relaxed.
The regular/straight jeans style is the most classic variation of men’s jeans. They are available in many colours, but the most wearable shade is light-to-medium denim or dark-coloured/black denim.
In terms of shape, regular/straight jeans are straight from the hip all the way down the leg, falling straight past the knee and down to the hem. They are not tapered at the bottom, meaning there is a spacious leg opening. They are also generally mid-rise.
Regular/straight jeans are flattering on most body types but can risk creating the illusion of a shorter body. So, if you’re concerned about appearing shorter than you are, or have a body type that is quite wide, regular/straight jeans may not be the most flattering on you, and you may prefer to opt for slimmer-fitting jeans with a tapered leg, such as “slim” or “skinny” jeans.
Or, for those who don’t work in a corporate environment and like to dress more casually and comfortably, the loose/relaxed style of jean, which is baggy from the hip to the hem, may be preferable. Loose-fitting jeans are also better for men who have bigger thighs, as they will not accentuate or draw attention to them.
Choosing the right t-shirts and shirts
When it comes to top-half clothing, it’s completely up to personal preference. There is nothing wrong with owning a collection of crew-neck white t-shirts; they are versatile, practical and inherently stylish. In fact, a simple plain t-shirt should never be underestimated (and takes the hassle out of dressing in the morning).
Plain shirts are also versatile and incredibly wearable in most scenarios and climates. For example, a plain white cotton shirt is perfectly acceptable in a working environment or when out for dinner and drinks. Or, a plain linen shirt in either a white, neutral or muted shade looks stylish and sophisticated and is perfect for those warmer days.
Getting your footwear right
Shoes are another thing that shouldn’t be overcomplicated. Staples for men are a pair of casual trainers or sneakers, a smart pair of shoes for work and more formal occasions - e.g. brogues or loafers - as well as sporting shoes and/or casual slip-on shoes.
The key to successful dressing is to master the three wardrobe staples - the right jeans, the t-shirt/shirt style best suited to you, and the right collection of shoes - you will have a uniform that is stylish and timeless.
